“Life is not a brief Candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations”.

George Bernard Shaw

Excerpt from a poem by
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

“Let me to-night look back across the span twixt dawn and dark, and to my consciences say - Because of some good deed to beast or man - “The world is better that I lived today”.”

Sense of Purpose

What is a sense of purpose? Does an individual really need one?

Wanting to help others directly or have a positive impact on the lives of others can be the sense of purpose someone needs in their life. Conversely if a person does not have a sense of purpose in their life, (even though to outsiders their life seems good), it can lead to a strong feeling of dissatisfaction with the individual’s whole life.

An individual may have a sense of purpose but does not describe it as such. “I do this job because I know it helps other people even though I don’t earn much money”.

Sometimes a sense of purpose can be described in graphic and dramatic detail, for example in Viktore Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning” in which he relates how he found a sense of meaning for his life; a sense of purpose in a most horrific situation in a concentration camp.

So it seems that in our own way we may all benefit for finding and living our own unique sense of purpose. Want to explore your sense of purpose?
